Science on the Square: Soap – Washing Away the Mystery
Friday10/236:00 pm - 9:00 pm
We all use soap in our everyday lives, but do you ever wonder how soap gets grease stains out of our clothes and off our hands? Join us at The Soap Opera during Science on the Square, where we will clean up our understanding of soaps by exploring how the molecular structure of soap molecules helps to mix water and grease together. We will then further explore the behaviors of soap molecules when they are in water alone and the nanostructures they spontaneously form. Finally, a homemade light scattering apparatus will allow us to perform simple scientific experiments to determine the molecular structure and concentrations of unknown soap solutions. Along the way, we will also learn how soap-like molecules are used to solve many engineering problems such as targeted chemotherapy or antibiotic delivery.
